Many post 9/11 veterans and servicemembers will soon have a new education benefits package available to them. This new Post 9/11 GI Bill, dubbed the GI Bill for the 21st Century, will be the best education benefits package since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944.
Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB)
The Montgomery GI Bill is divided into several programs.-
Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
Veterans and active duty servicemembers can get more than $37,000 tax free for their education and receive benefits for up to 36 months.
MGIB-AD also has the following three features:

Accelerated Payment
Veterans and active duty servicemembers can get lump-sum payments for 60% of tuition and fees for certain high-cost, high-tech educational programs.

Buy-Up
Active duty servicemembers can increase their MGIB-AD benefits by as much as $5,400.

Top-Up
Active duty servicemembers can combine MGIB-AD benefits with Tuition Assistance for 100% coverage of tuition and fees.

Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
Selected Reserve and National Guard members can get up to $10,000 tax free for their education and receive benefits for up to 36 months. Certain deactivated reservists also are eligible.

Armed Forces Tuition Assistance (TA)
Active duty servicemembers may receive up to $4,500 a year for tuition and fees. In some cases, Reserves and National Guard members are eligible.

Post-Vietnam Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
Program offered instead of the Montgomery GI Bill to servicemembers who served between 1977 and 1985. The government matches servicemember contributions to the program at a rate of $2 for every $1 contributed.

Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
Available to Selected Reserve and National Guard members who were activated on or after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and who serve at least 90 consecutive days. Eligible Reserves and Guard members could receive more than $28,000 in benefits.

Survivors & Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA)
More than $37,000 in educational benefits is available to eligible survivors and dependents of certain veterans and servicemembers.

Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)
Gives active duty servicemembers and certain veterans free access to numerous nontraditional learning opportunities: independent-study and online learning, earn college credit by passing exams, use your military experience for college credit, and more.

National Call to Service (NCS)
Choose to have $18,000 of students loans paid off and receive one year of full-time GI Bill benefits or other incentives. You must commit to eight years of continuous military service, which includes two years of up-front active duty followed by a combination of active duty, Selected Reserve, Individual Ready Reserve and other federal service programs.
